Montalcino is situated just over forty kilometers from Siena.
Wine has traditionally been part of the culture and tradition of Montalcino, with the first official vintage of Brunello di Montalcino dating back to 1888. It has become very popular outside Italy only since the mid nineteen-sixties and now can be counted among the best and well known of dry Italian dry wines.
The Biondi Santi family was the sole producer of the wine until after the Second World War but currently there are over 220 growers and over 150 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino. It is a single-variety wine, made using Sangiovese Grosso grapes -a clone of the Sangiovese variety- with a great fragrance, a velvety flavour and an intense yet delicate bouquet.
Another important wine of the region is the Rosso di Montalcino. It sells for a lesser price despite its good quality.
Our day tour through this region begins at 9.30 a.m. from your hotel or villa in Siena or Florence. We will then drive between clay hills and vineyards, passing through Monte Amite, before stopping in Montenero.
Here we undertake a visit of a small oil mill, seeing how extra virgin olive oil is made. We will also learn to taste the excellent oil and appreciate all the fine nuances which go into the production of this excellent olive oil as we sit on a terrace overlooking some of the finest views of the Val d’Orcia region.
We will drive through several vineyards, wineries and olive groves that offer spectacular views of green and lush landscapes until we finally reach the ancient town of Montalcino.
After a little bit of wandering through the streets and exploring this this medieval fortified town, we will lunch at a typical local trattoria.
Afterwards, we will go for a short drive and reach one of the oldest and well-known private vineyards of the region. This noble family has been producing Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino for decades.
There is a complete tour of the cellars and, of course, a tasting of the excellent wines produced by the vineyard. During the tasting you will learn to distinguish the differences between the wines and appreciate their finer qualities.
For tours undertaken at the end of September, which is harvest time, you can see the farmers hand picking the grapes with utmost care.
We then return you to your villa or hotel by 5 pm.
We can customize the tour for you if you wish to visit a specific place or vineyard. We can also customise other tours in and around the Tuscany region if you wish. Please send us an email and we will respond to your requests.
