A Day trip to Cortona and Arezzo

Meet your driver in Florence and start your enchanting excursion to the important Etruscan towns of Cortona and Arezzo of Tuscany, Italy.

Cortona is a town whose origins date back to Etruscan times. It is surrounded by ancient fortified walls making it a delightful medieval town to explore by foot. This town is situated on a hillside with an altitude of six hundred metres offers splendid views of surrounding vineyards and olive groves. It overlooks the beautiful lake of Perugia.

Explore the Etruscan Academy Museum, with its many beautiful paintings, frescoes and artifacts. The Diocesan Museum also has many famous frescoes and paintings including two panels by Fra Angelico. The splendid Renaissance church of Santa Maria della Grazie, designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini is worth a visit. This is the hometown of many famous painters including Luca Signorelli, Pietro Berrettini and Gino Severenni. There is also a famous Medici fortress built by Francesco Laparelli in 1549. It is indeed a delightful Tuscan town with a lot of interesting sites to visit during your Italy vacation.

After passing some time in Cortona, your driver will take to you to visit Arezzo, another important Etruscan hill-town. Spiral through the city, noting the medieval areas to the top, winding down to the more modern and prosperous areas below. Offering you a wondrous mix of the charming historic style through to the modern and stylish with some fabulous chic stores.

There are many places to visit including the Piazza Grande the medieval square which opens behind the Romanesque apse of the Santa Maria della Pieve. The Duomo (Cathedral) has fine stained glass windows. Behind the Duomo there is a beautiful road leading up to a sixteenth century Medici fortress designed by Antonio da Sangallo Jr. Whilst Arezzo offers many lovely churches filled with frescoes and paintings, one of the town's greatest treasures is the series of frescoes by Piero della Francesca. These frescoes depict La Leggenda della Verra Croce. These Renaissance masterpieces narrate the story of the "True Cross". Amongst the many palaces and museums, you can also find the ruins of a roman amphitheatre. Arezzo also conducts a medieval festival called the Joust of the Saracens twice a year. The Arezzo Wave Festival is a free and popular music festival conducted every year in July, and also hosts a regular and astoundingly large Antiques Fair that covers the entire city centre.

A tour guide can also be arranged to accompany you throughout your exploration of these towns. Prices are available upon request for this additional service.
