Starting out from your accommodation in Florence, your driver will take you towards Assisi. You will never forget the fist glimpse of the white hill-top city that seems to glow in the sunlight. Immediately associated with Saint Francis, you can explore the beautiful little city that was his birthplace.

The entire city of Assisi offers a diverse cultural and spiritual experience, and offers a sense of serenity that weaves with you through the narrow cobblestone streets. Take this full day trip to travel around Assisi to visit the churches, wander the streets, see the little stores selling wood crafts and other artisan wares.

This lovely city in the Umbria region has a rich historical and religious history. Aside from St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan Religious Order in 1208, St. Clare, founder of the Poor Clares, and Saint Gabriel of Our lady of Sorrows were also born here.

There are many beautiful churches but by far the best is the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is a world heritage site. It contains his relics and beautiful frescoes depicting his life. Saint Francis is remembered by not only by Christians but also by non Christians for his deep love for animals and birds. Some of the other famous churches are Santa Maria degli Angeli (Saint Mary), Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, Basilica of Santa Chiara (Saint Clare) and the cathedral of San Rufino (Saint Rufinus) and San Damiano - the church and monastery outside the city walls where the crucifix spoke to Saint Francis, prompting him to repair it.

The main square in the town is the Piazza del Commune. In this square you will see the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the Palazzo dei Priori (the seat of the town council). You can also find the pediment of the temple of Minerva in the square. It is now a Roman church. There is a fountain with three lions which dates back to the fifteenth century.

The Municipal Museum and Art Gallery is housed in the Palazzo Vallemani. It is filled with frescoes and paintings from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Famous artists represented in the collection include Giotto, Puccio Cappana, and Andrea d’Assisi. Here you can trace the history of many important artistic developments, such as the use of perspective and light art.

A walk along Via San Francesco will bring you to many craft shops, beautiful residences and interesting buildings as well as the Municipal Library that is housed in the Palazzo Giacobetti. It contains the original text of the Canticle of Creatures (Laudes Creaturarum). The entire town centre is enclosed within ancient stone walls, with eight city gates covering a perimeter of about five kilometres.

The city offers a calendar of rich cultural and religious events throughout the year. It is also famous for its lace and special Assisi cross stitch embroidery as well as many diverse hand made crafts. Nature lovers have miles of pristine forests and woods to explore or they can climb the Mount Subasio.

The Rocca Maggiore (the Major Fortress) dates back to 1357 and has lodged both imperial and military garrisons. From here you can get a beautiful view of Assisi and Umbria.
