Visiting Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio

We will take you for a delightful exploration along what is referred to as the Tuscan Riviera with its sandy beaches, the Apuan Alps and the beautiful blue Mediterranean Sea.

The Apuan Alps feature a rich variety of shady woods, quaint villages, fields, valleys, ancient mills and its famous marble quarries. There are many hikers’ trails which offer splendid views. We will spend some time in this beautiful area before proceeding to Forte dei Marmi.

Forte dei Marmi is a popular seaside resort which was exstablised as a port for the exportation of Italian marble some time during the sixteenth century. Parts of its original environment have been successfully transformed into lovely gardens and meadows with secluded villas nestled in harmony with its surroundings. It is the place to enjoy water sports and surfing and sailing or nearby mountaineering. All these activities are all on offer for the adventurous tourist.

Some areas worth a visit include the remains of the Forte dei Marmi, the Iron Factory, the Roman Areas, the Museum of Satire and caricature and the Modern Art Gallery. There are a few festivals and carnivals held here including the Festival of Satire and Caricature, an annual Jazz Festival and celebrations in August which honour the town’s Patron Saint Ermete, during which there is a brilliant fireworks display.

You will then have time to tour Viareggio, one of the most elegant and refined sea resorts in Italy. Viareggio is the oldest beach town in Tuscany, with a historic fishing harbour. It is famous for its Italian Carnival, which was first held in 1873.

But it is the landscape that will enthral you on your day tour, as you overlook the unique greenery of the hills, the deep pinewoods and the beautiful blue sea.

You have time to visit Mathilde’s tower, a Lucchese fortification built in 1541. It is famous for its architecture in the liberty period style. You can also find the famous poet Shelly’s bust and grave in this town. The town is also home to famous yatch builders, inspired by the promise of the ocean that spans out before them.
