Our art history guide will meet you at your hotel or the designated meeting point and we will begin our journey exploring Florence under the Medici’s. The House of Medici with their patronage made Florence a global power centre although they eventually lost Florence. We will spend the morning exploring Palazzo Medici Riccardi, one of the finest and most famous palaces in Florence. It was the symbol of political and cultural supremacy of the House of Medici in Florence. Michelazzo built the palace in the mid fifteenth century as commissioned by the Medici. It was later sold to the Riccardi. It has both the renaissance and baroque influence. The archway leads to a square courtyard with beautiful and famous statues. The Medici Museum is on the ground floor. It is filled with beautiful paintings and also furnishings of the Medicis including Fillipo Lippi’s Madonna and Child, Jacopo da Empolo’s “Wedding of Catherine de Medici and Henri II of France” and the death mask of Lorenzo di Medici who was called Il Magnifico or the Magnificent. The library has a vast collection of books and old manuscripts. Luca Giordano painted the vaulted ceiling with frescoes in his inimitable style

Palazzo Medici Riccardi has the oldest private chapel in Florence built by Michelozzo, which we will visit after exploring the palace. Benozzo Gozzoli decorated the chapel. One of the most famous frescoes is the Journey of theMagi to see Christ in the main room. On the side walls one can see the Adoration of the Child with angels worshipping. The Palazzo Medici Riccardi till today stands testimony to the importance of the Medicis in Florence.
