A Day trip to Pisa and Lucca

We will begin the tour by driving west towards the Tuscany coast to reach the world renowned city of Pisa. Our first stop with definitely be the Leaning Tower of Pisa, perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in Italy, and situated in the Campo dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles). This architectural wonder shares space with the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery). The cathedral, or Duomo, is a medieval architectural marvel with Romanesque, Byzantine and Muslim influences. The Baptistery dedicated to John the Baptist is the largest in the whole of Italy. The enclosed cemetery, although partly distroyed, is still filled with frescoes, sculptures and sarcophagi.

We will continue our trip by traveling towards the elegant city of Lucca. This city, with Ligurian, Etruscan and Roman origins, is enclosed by massive sixteenth century walls that are still intact. You can enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the local trattorias or restaurants before you begin strolling around the city and wandering the streets which have been walked for centuries, whilst exploring the shops and their local wares. There are many beautiful churches worth a visit, the most beautiful among them being the Cathedral of San Martino and San Michele in Foro.

Lucca is the birthplace of many famous composers and the Casa di Puccini (Puccini’s House) is open to the public. If you have the time and energy to spare you can take a walk along the top of Lucca’s well-preserved sixteenth century wall. The wall is a testimony to the skills of our ancestors who designed them to ward off attacks from unfriendly neighbours. It is a fantastic way to get a bird’s eye view of the city. After this fascinating and historic trip of Lucca we will return to Florence.
