Our driver will pick you up from your hotel or a designated meeting point and we will begin an exciting trip to Siena. The tour will cover rolling fields, vineyards, olive groves and beautiful landscapes of Siena. We will stop for a coffee at a beautiful fortified town before proceeding to the pecorino cheese farm and factory.
Signora Vittoria will greet you and take you on a guided tour of the farm and factory. You will gain a first hand experience of how an Italian farm is run successfully. You will get to see all the modern technologies used to raise the farm animals. Sheep’s milk is used to make the special “pecorino” and “ricotta “cheeses. The pecorino cheeses are made in traditional ways matured in caves. Some cheeses have pepper, truffles or even chilli added as flavours. These cheeses are wrapped in vine leaves or matured with wood shavings to give them their unique and distinct flavour. You can enjoy this delicious cheese with farm made wines, home baked fresh bread, fruit mustards and honey. You will also get to try the special “salami” made from the “Cinta Senese “pig. This pig is a cross breed of the wild boar and the domestic pig. It is common in this geographical area and has a white ring around its middle. The farm also produces a variety of vegetables seasoned with different herbs and extra virgin olive oil.
After that delicious typical Tuscan lunch in the farm house we will continue our trip by spending the afternoon exploring the beautiful city of Siena. Florence and Siena have a history of rivalry which exists to date but in a friendly manner. This beautiful city with its Gothic architecture and reddish brown bricks has given art the colour “burnt siena.”
You will spend the entire afternoon exploring the wonders of Siena beginning at the beautiful “Piazza del Campo” the shell shaped square where the world famous “Palio” race is held. This exciting and controversy filled horse race where ten contradas from the seventeen contradas (areas of the city) compete with each other deeply reflects the Sienese identity.
As you wander through narrow alleyways you will find quaint and picturesque restaurants and stores as well as boutiques selling high fashion. Do try some of the local delicacies like “ricciarelli “(almond biscuits), “panforte” (a sweet made with fruits and nuts) and “cavalucci” a dried bun with aniseed.
Siena’s cathedral the Duomo is spectacular and magnificent. There are also many museums in Siena one of the most famous ones being the Pinacoteca Nazionale that contains a huge collection (over fifteen hundred) of thirteenth to sixteenth century Sienese paintings.
If you are adventurous you can climb up the two hundred and eighty nine foot high “Torro di Mangia”, a miracle of architectural elegance. As you climb the steps you will get a breathtaking beautiful view of the beautiful city of Siena.
After that exhilarating climb up and down you can meet our driver around 5pm to head back to Florence.
