Touring Siena and San Gimignano

This tour touches on medieval Tuscany, beginning with an exploration of San Gimignano. This small village is fondly referred to as ”Medieval Manhattan'' owing to its skyline being  filled with ancient towers rising over orange tiled houses in narrow streets, which date back to the eleventh to thirteenth centuries.

In addition, you can visit the Duomo (Collegiate Church), the church of Saint Augustine and many other smaller churches. The People’s Palace has Dante’s hall and the Civic Museum and picture gallery is filled with wonderful works. The Museum of Sacred Art, the Archaeological Museum and the medieval wash houses are also worth a visit.

Next, visit Siena. Considered by many as Italy’s loveliest medieval city, the heart of Siena features a lovely shell-shaped city square, Piazza de Campo. It is the venue for the famous Palio horse races. The Palio reflects the cultural identity of the Sienese citizens as they compete to win the honour and the winning contrada (area of the city) celebrates for weeks after the victory.

There are many wonderful sites to visit including the Palazzo Pubblico with its famous Torre del Mangia, the Gothic Cathedral, and the Cathedral Museum with its famous artwork “Maesta” by Duccio di Buoninsegna.

There will also be a stop at the village of Monteriggioni which is the only completely walled Tuscan village. The walls are so well preserved that the village attracts many architects, historians and archaeologists alike. The main square, Piazza Roma, has a lovely Romanesque church. So inspirational is the village of Monteriggioni, that the poet, Dante, has described the turrets of this village in his Inferno Canto XXXI.
