San Gimignano Wine Tours - Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Trip

San Gimignano is a medieval town famous for its majestic towers which dot the skyline making some people refer to it as the “ancient Manhattan”.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano has been mentioned in official documents in 1276, when the town was flourishing and was a trading point not only for wines but also for saffron, wool, textiles, leather and oil. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of Italy’s finest white wines. In 1966 it became the first wine to be awarded the DOC status. It has a rich floral bouquet. It is straw yellow in colour which changes to a golden hue as it ages. It has a fine but slightly sour taste.

We will begin our tour at 9.30 am from your hotel or villa in Siena. We will travel towards the north till we reach the tiny village of Monteriggioni where we will stop for a while. It is a beautifully preserved fortified medieval village. The walls stretch for a distance beyond five hundred metres, are over twenty metres high and have fourteen towers.

We will continue traveling till we reach San Gimignano. It is called the town of beautiful towers. It was an important stopping point for pilgrims traveling to or from Rome on the Via Francigena (French Pilgrim Road). Here we will visit a small vinery which produces Vernaccia. We will tour the cellars and have a private tasting of their delicious wines.

After visiting the vinery we will go into the older parts of the town. In the heart of the town there is a well renowned restaurant mentioned in a leading wine magazine. There we will have a lovely lunch and sample a very fine wine.

After lunch we will stroll through the town’s medieval streets. There will be ample time to stop and shop at the shops selling arts and crafts including typical Tuscan handicrafts like pottery and alabaster items.

After the shopping we will go for a second wine tasting session. This time we will go to a vinery nearby. We will taste both Vernaccia and also Super Tuscan wines.

After the wine tasting we will return to your hotel or villa around 5.30 pm.
